87 MILKY WAY

Toronto, Canada

This live/work residence for two artists, a movie director and a painter, is situated on a laneway site in the Queen St. West area of Toronto. Two discretely shifting cubes bound together with one skin house two 120 square meter studios and a 170 square meter residence. Site conditions were exploited by stacking the two studios one atop another and orienting them to the north. This allowed the residence full southern exposure, with the main living space just below grade and the master suite on the second floor with its own private garden. The house is separated from the studios by a double height stair allowing light to flood deep into the footprint of the project.
